Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
We typically turn our entire fields at least once every two to three years with a moldboard plow, in the late fall or early spring, then reestablish rows, planting clover, alfalfa or grass in the footpaths, and work our beds with a rototiller, disc and bed shaper to plant.

on farm, local wood chips We do not apply compost so much as make it in fallow beds utilizing both living greenhouse wastes from flats of cut greens and general appropriate farm waste. We turn it in the rows after appropriate periods of aging, then prepare to return the row, or rows to production for the next growing season.

We have very heavy weed problems that we manage with flame weeding, timely cultivation, hand weeding and extensive use of mulches, either living, organic or plastic

Safer soap, pyrethrins, sticky traps, neem oil and Bt. Our use is very sparing with all pesticides. Our primary insect problems are aphids in the greenhouse and hoophouses which we find we can control fairly well with carefully selected crops, and squash and cucumber beetles which we control with Bt in addition to hand picking and removing egg clusters. We typically try to grow crops that have low insect pressure, allowing us to reduce our need for pest controls.

Our primary disease problems come in tomatoes, and we built hoophouses in which we grow tomatoes now, dramatically reducing our disease problems in that area. We rotate crops in a fairly wide rotation to be sure that disease cycles are reduced as much as possible, and work to produce healthy plants that are minimally stressed while growing to reduce susceptibility.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
To the south is a country road, but we do not produce any edible crops within approximately 100ft of the road. We use that area for perennial flowers and shrubs for cut flowers. To the east is our only agricultural border, but along the entire length is about a 30 foot depth of treeline, then the railroad levee, and more treeline before the neighboring crop begins. To the north is a creek that creates a 50-60 yard buffer before reaching the grounds of a school and woods. The west side is edged primarily by wooded lots and a couple of houses on the other side of our tree line which is 20-30 feet deep.
