We have been sustainably farming in the Snoqualmie Valley for five years. We would like to become certified as a way to share with our public our commitment to healthy soils and good farming practices that respect the biodiversity of our soil.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
We are working on procuring a BCS tractor with a harrow and rotary plow for bed preparation. At the beginning of the season, we disc our soil and use a chisel plow if needed. We also use a broadfork in our beds.
Do you use Cover Crops? *

Buckwheat, white clover, flowers, vetch, rye, Australian pea.

If yes, please note general sources (on farm, purchased complete, local grass clippings, local dairy, etc.): *
We cut the cover crops and lay them down as green compost/mulch. We also use compost from Mt. Oly which is a fish compost.
Please list application rates. Give a specific amount or range (for example: one to two tons per acre, ten wheelbarrow loads per 1,000 square feet, or 1-2 inches deep). Do not answer "varies". *

Last year we used lime on our soil to increase the PH. Michaele's farm has been limed many times and therefore we will not need to use lime. We will know more about what we need after receiving back the results of our soil test.
Have any chemical fertilizers been applied to the fields you are seeking Certification for in the last three years (36 months)? *

In our new field at Growing Things Farm, we have bindweed which we have been told is only eradicated using goats and pigs. Michaele at Growing Things has both of these livestock. We also have buttercup which is managed through mulching and weeding.

Flea beetle. We use intercroping -- vegetables with cover crops to confuse the flea beetles as well as row covers.

Since this is the first time on Michaele's farm, we do not yet know what we will face. On our past farmland, we were pretty lucky. Club root is in our valley, but we did not have it on our farm. Our valley is also susceptible to late blight which we have managed by keeping our tomatoes protected in hoop houses.

Chemical/Spray Drift and Buffers:

Do you have an adequate buffer to protect yourself from potential contamination? *
Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
Next to Michaele's land to the west are hay fields for at least 20 acres before another organic farm. To the east of her farm are Hmong farmers who grow flowers. At least 5 acres separates us from the Hmong field. There is a hedgerow at the southend of Michaele's field which connects her to fields that are hayed. TO the north of her farm is the Snoqualmie River.
