We have a school garden as a part of our sustainable program at Interlochen Center for the Arts. We have a greenhouse, a 40x20 high tunnel hoop house, and several raised beds and herb beds. We are looking to have this certification for the benefit of our consumers - all of the students, faculty, and staff in our cafeteria.

We purchased our initial compost, but compost moving forward will all be created on campus. We will be purchasing a 20-foot in-vessel composter that will compost all landscaping, food scraps, and paper materials on campus.

We use mulch to help control our weeds. We have mulched around our beds and between rows and between plants. We hand weed, namely, in the hoop house and in the garden beds.

We use net row covers and hand remove visible insects.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
There are no agricultural lands in our vicinity. We have no neighbors, either. We are far enough away from the road that any road pollution will not come into our space. We have a perimeter fence surrounding our space to keep out any predators. There are no fields around us.
