Farmland Management and Practices

- BCS rotary plow for initial tillage out of sod. After that a digging fork for primary tillage and a Johnny's tilther for creating fine seed beds.

- bind weed is probably the worst weed. I control by digging them out. Other weeds controlled with a scuffle hoe or hand hoe. I use a silage tarp as well. I use no products.
- Describe your primary insect challenges AND methods of control. Do not answer "none". You MUST indicate either actual pest challenges and/or LIKELY challenges, and you must ALSO indicate how you manage (or would manage) them. If you indicate a product, also specify how often it's used. *
- The main insect is cabbage worm. I intend on using row cover when colder and protectnet when hot. I'd use Bt if I must.

- early blight on tomatoes really is the main disease based on gardening here in the past. I'll choose resistant tomato varieties. I intend on using preventative measures such as compost tea and regular feedings. I don't intend on spraying copper. I don't intend on growing cucurbits so I won't have an issue with cucurbit downy mildew. I will grow mainly greens and as of now do not know of any disease issues I will have with them. This will be my first year having a production oriented farm.

- Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
- This is a suburban backyard farm. To the south are woods and it is 500 feet to the next neighbors yard behind that. To the north is a road. It's a cul-de-sac. To the east and west are neighbors' backyards. They don't spray anything to my knowledge.

- 2018 will be my first season. As of now I do not intend on using cover crops because I intend on leaving a silage tarp on the field all winter in order to encourage weeds to germinate and then die. I would definitely use cover crops once weed pressure subsides, though. Thank you.
