Farmland Management and Practices
- Primary Tillage System: *
- We use permanent raised beds, which we manage with minimal tillage. Beds are formed in blocks of 10 using a BCS with a rotary plow and tiller. Once formed, beds are maintained with a broadfork, rake and stirrup hoe. If necessary beds are shallow tilled using the BCS tiller with a gauge wheel.

- Azomite, Hi-Calcium Lime, Gypsum, Trio KMAG Sustane 4-6-4 and 8-2-4, Aqua Power 5-1-1 Fish Fertilizer Minerals are applied annually as needed based on soil test results to maintain proper pH and to balance soil minerals as described in "The Intelligent Gardener" by Steve Solomon. Fertilizers are applied pre-planting and as a side-dress based on the nutrient requirements of the crop.

- We have very high weed pressure. Problem weeds include: various grasses, velvetLeaf, purslane, lambsquarters, Burdock and many others. We mow field boarders to help prevent weeds from going to seed. We use stale seed bed techniques (tarps and flame-weeder), cultivation with colinear and stirrup hoes and hand weeding as needed. No herbicides are used.

- Our primary insect pests are: aphids, flea beetles, cabbage looper, cabbage maggot, cabbageworm, cucumber beetle, tomato fruitworm, armyworms, slugs, grasshoppers and Japanese Beetles. We are establishing an IPM program utilizing scouting, removal of host plants, Degree Day monitoring, sticky traps and phermone traps. Our primary pest control measure is exclusion using row covers and insect netting on vulnerable crops. When necessary OMRI certified pest control products are used including: Safer Brand Insecticidal Soap (aphids), Dipel Bt (Lepidoptera species), Sluggo (slugs), Pyganic (Flea Beetles) and Milky Spore (Japanese Beetle). No pest control products are used on a preset schedule. The decision to use a product is based on degree of infestation and degree of economic impact on the impacted crop. Deer are controlled with 8' deer fencing.

- Our primary disease challenges are: Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Botrytis, Cercospora Leaf Spot, Anthracnose, Early and Late Blight. Disease is controlled through cultural practices (removal of host plants, removal of diseased plants, crop rotation, increased airflow, prompt harvest and avoiding handling plants when wet), disease resistant varieties and the use of OMRI certified disease control products including: Seranade and Oxidate. These products may be applied on a schedule (per product label) as a preventative measure for the most vulnerable crops.

Seeds, Transplants and Buffers

- All transplants are grown using Naturally Grown/Organic methods. Seed starting mix is 90% Promix MP (OMRI) and 10% Wiggle Worm Vermicompost (OMRI). 4oz. Sustane 4-6-4 is added / 5 gallons of mix. No Sustane is used for microgreens production. Aqua Power 5-1-1 (OMRI)and Maxicrop Soluable Seaweed Powder (OMRI) are used for additional fertility. All transplants are started indoors under lights with supplemental bottom heat as required.

Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
- crop fields have a 25' buffer to the north. Property to the north has been in a conventional corn, wheat and bean rotation for many years and has been taken out of production and enrolled in CRP for the next ten years. Prevailing winds are from the south-west during the outdoor growing season, so drift concerns were minimal. To the east is our two acre woods, to the south is 150' of pasture and neighboring woods, to the east it is 400' to the road.

- 2018 is the third season under our management. The land was not previously in agricultural production. We have a signed affidavit from the previous owner stating that no prohibited materials were applied as required by the NOP.
