I believe in growing all produce with natural practices and would like to ensure my customers and my neighbors that everything I produces is certified naturally grown. It's also a unique label in my area, and I hope to raise awareness about alternative labels to the NOP's label.

Farmland Management and Practices

Primary Tillage System: *
Primary tillage is done with a walk-behind tractor in the hoop houses, and with a small tractor using a moldboard plow in in the field. The field we plowed this fall for production in the spring hadn't been in production for 3 years, but was currently in organic production.

Fish emulsion used for on farm seed house, blood meal used for final bed prep before transplanting, and a possibility of using a algae/alfalfa slow release pellet mix on field beds this year, but I'm unsure as of right now.

The farm that my land is on has been certified organic for several years now, and they've been managing weeds through physical means only. The problem weeds are canada thistle, quackgrass, field bindweed, labsquarters, and pigweed. There is a large weed seedbank on this farm. I will be using landscape fabric in the high tunnel for weed suppression and physical means outdoors (hand cultivation, scuffle hoeing, hand weeding, etc...). No purchased products will be use for weed control.

This is my first year as a cut-flower only farmer. I haven't had large amounts of cut flowers in the past, so this year will be an experiment to see what pests are prevalent on the flowers. The only issues I've had in the past is earwig infestations on sunflowers, and this was due to inappropriate harvest times. We used an air compressor to remove them. I have used BT in the past, but don't see myself having a cabbage moth problem this year - but, you never know! Row cover will be my main defense against pests on susceptible plants such as ornamental kale. I'm planting sweet alyssum on the edges of all of my beds to combat aphids, and will be planting phacelia abundantly to attract beneficials as well.

This is my first year as a cut-flower only farmer. I haven't had large amounts of cut flowers in the past, so this year will be an experiment to see what diseases are prevalent on the flowers. For disease control, I will be using drip irrigation on all of my flowers, in the hoophouse and outdoors. No products will be used for disease, but careful observation and crop removal will be practiced.

Please describe your buffer. Be as specific as possible. On all sides, how far is it from your crops to the next closest use (road, conventional crop, residential yard)? Be sure to specify what is grown on neighboring land that is in agricultural use. For example: To the north and east, a wooded area of at least 100 yards separates us from the neighbor's corn fields, to the south is a fallow field at least 100 yards deep separating us from the road, and to the west about 60 feet separates our crops from a field where conventional corn and soybeans are grown. *
My crops are separated from possible sources of contamination by hundreds of feet of grassland and organic vegetable production land. One field of mine is susceptible to possible run-off from residential areas to the south, but rainfall in Gallatin County, Montana is low, and there is a 100 ft strip of native grasses between the residential area and my field. To the west there is several hundred yards of untreated pasture land until there's an irrigation ditch, and conventional hay field on the other side. To the north there are several hundred yards of organic diverse vegetables and then another residential plot. To the east are the homes of the property that I lease from. These are at least 200 yards from my hoop house and field, and then another 50 yards before there's a road.
